AUTISM AND FILMMAKING

This book not only examines the nature of filmmaking in relation to autism, but also examines filmmaking as a craft. I have intended this book to be a primer for individuals interested in filmmaking and autism, so that there is information and analysis on both subjects. Filmmakers can harness public opinion and hopefully educate the public on the reality of living on the spectrum in a world that in many instances is very unforgiving and difficult to navigate. I hope that this book will aid creators, teachers, facilitators and parents in creating their own film or music groups.

UNSOUND REDUX

“Unsound Redux”, the docu-series reveals a story told by a generation of musicians who began 30 years ago and have continued their creative output to today. Before the internet they networked with each other, creating an international community, trading tapes, zines and records. This two disc set features four films by director William Davenport,  with extensive interviews, recent and archival music performance footage and so much more... Unsound magazine was published from 1983-1987. Before the inception of the internet and on the brink of the desktop publishing revolution, Unsound created a forum for  outlier musicians and artists to connect. Documentary filmmaker William Davenport was the editor and publisher of Unsound: “I left the music scene many years ago, but found myself interested in finding out what happened to the musicians that filled the pages of Unsound. I was limited by only having the resources to film within the United States, although Unsound magazine had an international scope. Traveling from the East Coast to West Coast I did interview after interview, and soon discovered links that would develop into the Unsound Redux project, three films emerged: “Great American Cassette Masters”, “The New Punks” and “Ziners”. I’ve also included a bonus  film, “The People’s Music”, which documents the 2013 Saint Petersburg Noise Festival.”

THE PROBLEM IS YOU: MY LIFE AS THE PROBLEMIST

This book explores my work as Problemst, which is/was my musical moniker. The book represents remnants, memories and artifacts fromthe 80’s through to the present. I was introduced to electronic music and punk in the 70’s. With electronics it was the beginning of that field where it was transitioning to modular systems. I started making little movies as a teenager, so obviously the soundtrack component was important to the films. By the time 1980 came about I was ready to create sonic and visual experiments. As I created music I also concurrently did visual work, either films, graphics, performances or even painting. I’ve always considered myself an interdisciplinary artist even though at periods in my life I have concentrated primarily on one medium at times. In this book are descriptions of music projects, lyrics, performance documentation, and other artistic artifacts.
